8-month-old baby dies and mother hurt in car crash

An 8-month-old boy pulled out of a car that is believed to have slid off the icy roadway and into a drainage canal in Louisiana has died, authorities said on Wednesday.

The boy’s mother remains in critical condition at a hospital in Metairie, Jefferson Parish.

Authorities have not released the names of the boy or his mother. 

News of the baby’s death was reported by The Times-Picayune.

The crash took place near a large intersection in Metairie just after 9:30am on Wednesday.

The woman driving the car was heading westbound on West Esplanade Avenue.

According to authorities, she lost control of her car and hit a curb.

The car then rolled into the canal.

Deputies from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office and the local fire department responded to the scene.

Emergency rescue crews pulled the mother and her baby out of the vehicle, but they were unconscious, according to the sheriff’s office.

The infant was rushed to Tulane-Lakeside Hospital in Metairie, where he was pronounced dead just after 11am.
