‘The pain suffered by Ruthie and Jonathan is nearly impossible to fathom.’

Miles and Lauren Lew were in the middle of a pedestrian crosswalk on 9th Street and Fifth Avenue in Park Slope with their young children.

Lew’s one-year-old son, Josh, was also killed.

Miles and Lauren Lew were injured.

Bruns, who ignored doctors’ orders not to drive because of her history of seizures and heart ailments, was charged last Thursday with manslaughter by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, the Daily News reported.

‘She took the lives of two innocent babies, injured three pedestrians, their mothers,’ Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said.

‘And it was tragic, but it was solely due to her selfish decision to drive.’

Bruns pleaded not guilty. She reportedly wept in the back of the courtroom after the judge set bail at $75,000.

She faces a total of 10 counts, including criminally negligent homicide, reckless endangerment, assault and other counts. If convicted, she faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.

Three days before the crash, first responders were called to Bruns’ apartment after receiving a report about a cardiac condition.

She told police at the time of the crash she suffers from heart issues, seizures and multiple sclerosis.

A FDNY source told the Daily News that another medical emergency call was placed to her home December 22, and yet another on November 19 – both were regarding a cardiac condition.

Her health issues had become such that this past January she went on medical leave from her job at ClearCaptions.

She returned in February when she was given medical clearance, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Just this past September, Burns allegedly struck a pedestrian in Long Island City, Queens.

Bruns told local authorities that she has no recollection of the incident and was unaware of what she had done until she was notified, sources told the New York Post.

Toxicology results came in during the crash. Burns came up negative for possible drug or alcohol traces.

Moments before the crash, the two kids and their mothers had just gotten off the bus and were crossing the street when Burns who was driving a white Volvo sped through the intersection at 9th Street and Fifth Avenue in Park Slope, striking the families.

At first, the driver tried to speed away, dragging the stroller that the boy was being pushed in behind her for half a block, until she crashed into some parked cars on the opposite side of the street and came to a stop.

‘The kids were run straight over, and the driver tried to get away and hit a car,’ one anonymous witness told the Post.

‘I don’t even want to think about this. … Just to know those kids were ran down like a dog.’

One witness described to the New York Post how Lew tried to save her son immediately after the tragedy unfolded, but it was too late.

‘The mom was sitting there next to him screaming,’ said Andrew Macaluso, 26, who is a fourth-year medical student.

‘She was just kind of [saying], ‘Oh, God, this can’t be happening. Tell me this isn’t happening. What’s going on?” Macaluso said.

‘I said, ‘Are you the mom?’ and she said, ‘Yeah,” he continued.

He went on to detail their efforts over the next several minutes, as they tried to revive her little boy.

‘The child had blood on his face,’ Macaluso said. ‘She wipes off his face and gives him air while I’m giving him chest compression.’

Then paramedics arrived and took the victims away.

‘When they took her out she was just standing there, like nothing,’ Muñiz said. ‘No emotion. Not sad. Not crying. Not asking questions: ‘Is everybody alright?’ Not shaking. Nothing.’

After she was set on a stretcher, the first responder checked Bruns’ vision, and then gave her telephone and handbag to her.

‘She was texting on her cell phone like nothing happened,’ Muñiz said. ‘Like she had just parked the car.’

Ruthie Ann Miles is a Broadway star who won a Tony Award for her performance in The King and I.

She also has a recurring role in the hit television drama The Americans.
