AFP accidentally live-streams high-level security briefing

  • A link to a live stream on Periscope was posted to the AFP’s Twitter Wednesday
  • Officers were discussing how police operations would unfold before the arrest
  • One could be heard suggesting the AFP was ‘not going in all guns blazing’

A -lip up by Australian Federal Police’s media team almost leaked crucial details of the organised arrest of a suspected North Korean agent.

The team accidentally broadcast internal discussions about how the arrest would play out via the social media site, Periscope, last Wednesday.

A link to the live streaming video was shared to the AFP’s official Twitter page just days before the arrest of Chan Han Hoi in Sydney.

The man was arrested for his suspected involvement in helping arm North Korea’s regime with weapons of mass destruction, The West Australian reports.

Details of the operation briefing before the arrest, the timing of the arrest, and the potential need to brief both Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, was revealed in the recording.

An officer could also clearly be heard suggesting the AFP was ‘not going in all guns blazing, it’s only half-a-dozen people and a forensic van’.

The tweet was reportedly deleted soon after being posted, but the broadcast remained live for some time.

At least 40 people tuned in and listened to the broadcast before it was deleted.

The AFP confirmed sharing the live stream was accidental but refused to comment on the details given it had been referred to the AFP’s security team for an internal review.

‘Steps have been taken to ensure such incidents will not occur again,’ a spokesman said.
