Akron boy finds gun and shoots 8-year-old cousin in the stomach

  • Shooting that left eight-year-old clinging to life took place in Akron, Ohio, early Sunday 
  • Police say nine-year-old found a pistol in a cupboard while his cousin was playing video games in the living room  

A nine-year-old boy shot and critically wounded his eight-year-old cousin with a handgun police say he found in a kitchen cupboard while searching for snacks.

According to Akron police, the two boys were playing video games when the older boy picked up the gun, pointed it at his younger relative and pulled the trigger, hitting the eight-year-old in the abdomen.

Police responded to the scene in the 1200 block of Marcy Street at around 1am on Sunday after a 14-year-old boy who was looking after the younger children ran to the neighbors for help.

The injured boy was rushed to Akron Children’s Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition on Monday. 

Officers later searched the residence found a pistol and a revolver, reported Akron Beacon-Journal. 

Investigators have not publicly identified the children involved or the owner of the weapon. It is unclear where the minors’ parents were at the time of the shooting. 

No charges were immediately filed. The shooting remains under investigation.
