Ameera Stokes ‘bludgeoned her father and stabbed him to death’

An 18-year-old girl from Indiana has been charged with bludgeoning and stabbing her father to death during an argument over what police described as ‘life issues.’

According to the victim’s ex-wife, Donald Stokes would routinely fat-shame their teenage daughter, Ameera Stokes, whom she described as suicidal and suffering from depression.

The fatal incident took place in Mount Morris Township, Machina, where Ameera had arrived recently to stay with her father after her latest failed suicide attempt.

At around 5.30am on Sunday, the local police department got a 911 call from Ameera, who told a dispatcher that her father was dead.

Officers who responded to the victim’s home in the 1000 block of Wet Genesee Street discovered the 53-year-old man’s bloodied and battered body lying in the stairwell leading to the basement.

Mount Morris Township Police Chief Terence Green told Mlive.com that Ameera and her father had gotten into an argument over ‘some life issues,’ which escalated to physical violence and eventually led to the bloodshed.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said the teenager struck her father in the head with a hammer. As he lay on a mattress, convulsing, the girl allegedly stabbed him in the chest multiple times, killing him.

Ameera was arraigned on Monday on a single count of first-degree murder. She is being held without bail and is due back in court on May 24.

In a phone interview with ABC12 on Wednesday, Gretchen Brasher, Ameera’s mother, that her daughter was kind and artistic, but had a rough childhood marked by financial hardship and emotional abuse.

Brasher, who re-married in 2015, said that she did not have the means to support Ameera and her sister when they were children, so she sent the girls to live with their biological father, Donald, in Michigan.

‘He was very verbally abusive. She had a belly, so he would tease her about being fat,’ she said. ‘He would like let her have an apple for dessert, while everybody else was having something better.’

A short time after Ameera came to live with her dad, Brasher was injured in a car accident and became addicted to pain medications, which eventually landed her behind bars.

While Brasher was in prison, she said then-13-year-old Ameera stabbed a friend at an after-school program. The girl was spared jail time for the crime, and instead was sent to a rehabilitation program, which she completed in February 2017.

Following her release, Ameera moved in with her mother and her new family in Muncie, Indiana. Over the past year, according to Brasher, her daughter had made a half-dozen suicide attempts.

Brasher’s husband posted a lengthy status update on Facebook this week, saying that Ameera’s most recent suicide attempt took place on February 12, when the girl took his car and drove it into a pole at 70mph.

Ameera was later admitted to a mental health facility, but checked herself out just over a month ago, and a few weeks later made her way to Michigan to stay with her father.

Brasher revealed that her daughter told her that she had run out of her medication just a couple of days before the deadly incident.

A couple of months earlier, Brasher said Ameera began talking about how she wanted to go to prison so she could have a roof over her head without being a burden to anyone.
