A 20-year-old American man died after going off-piste and plunging off a cliff in a Swiss ski resort, police have said.

His body was discovered by cantonal police in Valais yesterday morning after friends reported him missing when he did not return home.

The man had left the marked piste near Mont-Fort above the Verbier resort in the Four Valleys ski area at around 2pm.

He was found by rescue searchers at the bottom of a rock wall which was ‘several tens of metres’ high, according to local media reports.
