Andre Agassi slips into Melbourne for the Australian Open

While most of the attention has been on Australia’s rising tennis star Nick Kyrgios, former world number one Andre Agassi slipped into the Australian Open.

Promoting coffee brand Lavazza, the 47-year-old still looked like he was fighting fit after retiring from the professional circuit in 2006, amid health issues.

With his signature bald head, the fierce American Grand Slam champion cut a gentle figure as he chatted with a female reporter from Channel 7, at Grand Slam Oval in Melbourne.

Fighting fight! Former World number one, Andre Agassi, slipped into Melbourne for the Australian Open this week, coaching 30-year-old Serbian player Novak Djokovic as well as promoting coffee brand Lavazza

At times, sipping from what appeared to be a macchiato-style coffee in his hand, the tennis great appeared typically charismatic, and was at times making gestures with his hands.

For the event, the tennis icon was obviously enjoying the seasonably warm Melbourne weather, wearing a black Nike tennis T-shirt and a pair of black sports shorts.

The tennis star completed the look with a statement watch, a beaded necklace and a pair of Nike sports shoes featuring the iconic logo.

Smiling broadly, the tennis star was obviously thrilled to be back near the courts, particularly as he continues to coach 30-year-old Serbian player, Novak Djokovic, who only recently blasted Australia Open players for the temperature on the courts.

Known for his life on and off the court, the player was in a high-profile relationship with The Blue Lagoon actress Brooke Shields from 1997 to 1999, before marrying German tennis champion, Steffi Graff.

The pair now share two children: 16-year-old Jaden Gil Agassi and 14-year-old, Jaz Elle Agassi.

An eight-time Grand Slam winner, Andre is generally thought to be one of the best players in the game, but has since taken to commentating on the game.

Speaking to The Telegraph, he said he’d ‘put Nadal number one, Federer number two.’

He then added: ‘I’d Federer separated himself from the field for four years. He separated himself from Roddick and Hewitt.’

Commenting on Nick Kyrgios, the tennis great told Sydney Morning Herald he thought he’d be a more effective player if he listens to a coach.

‘I’m a big believer in life,’ he started.

‘And what I’ve learned is that learning in 10 minutes what would take someone (by themselves) 10 years is a very effective way to maximise the short window that you get in this sport.’
