Animal activists call on memorial for 1500 chickens killed

Animal welfare activists are calling on a permanent sign commemorating the lives of 1500 chickens killed in a truck crash to be erected at the scene of the accident.

A semi trailer carrying 6000 seven-week-old chickens went down on Melbourne Road in North Geelong on Monday, causing chaos and closing the busy highway for 10 hours.

The driver, 49, from Drysdale, was bound for Turi Food’s owned Golden Farms in Breakwater when he failed to navigate a bend and rolled the vehicle about 10.15am, Geelong Advertiser reports.

Overhead images showed the full devastation of the rollover, with thousands of chickens shown strewn across the road in the aftermath.

Animal activism organisation, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Australia, is lobbying for a sign with a message encouraging people to go vegan to be installed.

Spokeswoman Emily Rice says the tribute will serve as a reminder to all motorists to be mindful of the innocent victims who often suffered at the hands of drivers.

‘The tribute would feature an image of a chicken next to the words ‘In Memory of the Chickens Who Suffered and Died at This Spot. Try Vegan’ and would remind all drivers, including those with animals on board, to travel safely,’ Ms Rice said.

‘We hope our memorial will prompt people not to eat animals or — at the very least — remind truck drivers to make animals’ transport to slaughter as safe and comfortable as possible.’

PETA has submitted an example of what the memorial would look like to VicRoads, which they hope will be erected at the Melbourne Road overpass at Corio Quay Road.

Acting Sergeant Brendan Whitefield said local council animal management teams and vets were called in to help euthanase and recover surviving birds.

‘It’s distressing, no-one likes to see that sort of stuff, it was a horrendous scene,’ he told ABC News.

The truck hit a power pole before rolling outside Federal Mills and crushing railing and traffic barriers, according to witnesses.

The driver was pulled to safety and taken to Geelong University Public Hospital where he was treated for an arm injury.
