If you live in Victoria and are considering a pet, now is the purr-fect time to give a stray its forever home.
The Australian Animal Protection Society has slashed its adoption fees by half as it urgently seeks to rehome 126 cats and dogs.
Its animal shelter was given six weeks to vacate its current site at Keysborough on Melbourne’s southeast outskirts after it was acquired by the Education Department.
The non-profit organisation now has until June 20 to rehome 100 cats and 26 dogs.

‘We need help to put a call out far and wide for foster carers, rescue groups and the general community to step forward and offer either temporary or permanent homes for these lovely animals,’ a post on the Australian Animal Protection Society Facebook page states.
‘A temporary location has been found however due to all the council requirements that we need to conform to, we are greatly concerned we may end up with a number of animals and no place to house them.’
The organisation has bought another property in nearby Dandenong, which is 2-3 years away from being completed.
A temporary location in Dandenong South that ‘ticked most of the boxes’ was found so the shelter continue to operate until its new home is finally ready.

‘We expected a few problems in readying this site for animal use, however not the roller coaster ride we’ve endured,’ the Facebook post states.
‘We now have six weeks to go until we have to move and although on the threshold of council signing our permit, we will still have to fit out the property with pens and facilities to care for the animals to be housed there. We cannot risk having animals and no place to take them. We intend to continue this work once we are settled into our temporary site but we just have to ensure the animals currently in our care are safely settled elsewhere and request your help to facilitate this outcome.’

It means the current animals there need to be rehomed while the temporary shelter is rebuilt.
‘We want good homes, we don’t want people taking these animals for the sake of it,’ shelter president Megan Seccull told 7 News.
‘They’re mainly second chance animals who have had a rough life to start with. They’re heartier and cuter. People aren’t spending money on animals when we’ve got all these animals right here.’
The shelter has already been inundated with inquiries since its plight was featured by 7 News and radio station 3AW on Wednesday.
Adoption fees start from $100.
All animals are microchipped, desexed and vaccinated.
‘We’ve got some beautiful animals here and they’re all ready to go,’ Ms Seccull said.

The organisation will hold a giant garage sale at its current shelter site on June 2-3.
Building materials, animal supplies, aviaries, cages, household items, kennels are among the items for sale.
‘Everything must go, no reasonable offers refused and what’s best is all proceeds go to support the animals in our care,’ its Facebook page states.
