Anna Soubry: Remainer MP had to be guarded by SIX armed police at meeting

A Remainer MP had to be guarded by six armed undercover police officers at a pubic meeting because of the threats they received over Brexit, an ex Tory minister today said.

Anna Soubry told how she and her colleagues have received death threats because of their criticisms of Brexit.

She tore into the deep division and animosity which she warned is tearing her party, and the country, apart.

Getting visibly angry as she recounted the abuse which has been thrown at Remainers, she called for compromise.

Ms Soubry, a former business minister, made the comments as she spoke in today’s crucial Brexit debate where MPs will be voting on a series of crunch amendments.

The MP for Broxtowe said:  ‘I am getting a little tired of honourable members and right honourable members on the backbenches, in Government, even in the Cabinet, who come up to me and others in quiet and dark corridors.

‘To British businesses who demand private meetings where they lay bare their despair but refuse to go public.

‘To the commentators who say to me “You’re doing a great job, keep on going” in the face of death threats – which mean that one of our number had to attend a public engagement with six armed undercover police officers.

‘That is the country we have created and it’s got to stop.’

Ms Soubry said previously loyal Tories who have very rarely rebelled against their leadership will vote against them to give Parliament a meningful vote on the negotiations.

She also criticised others who ‘for decades have plotted and connived’ and ‘got rid of leaders’.

She added: : ‘Anybody and anything that has stood in their way and they will continue so to do – even if they are supported by Russian bots and their dirty money.

‘They will do what they have had a life’s ambition to do – which is to take us over the cliff into the hard Brexit that my constituents did not vote for.’

Her words came in the middle of today’s impassioned debate on the 15 Brexit amendments tabled by the Lords.

Her words come after many MPs – particularly women – have told of the barrage of abuse they have been subjected to, particularly online.

Labour MP Jess Phillips has told how she was bombarded by 600 online rape threats in a single night as she backed calls to end anonymity on social media.

And she revealed that her constituency office has been vandalised for the second time in two years.

Her remarks come after Security Minister Ben Wallace said digital IDs should be brought in to end online anonymity that permits bullying and grooming.

Ms Philips, a mother-of-two, told the Cheltenham Science Festival, Ms Phillips said, she is inundated with threatening and abusive messages ‘every single day’.

She said: ‘In one night I received 600 rape threats. It was probably more, but I stopped counting.

‘To try and subvert that, I received thousands of comments from people saying ‘I wouldn’t even rape her’.
