Asian woman claims hipster café gave her a ‘racist’ receipt after she ordered raisin toast

‘It wouldn’t say white if I was Caucasian’: Asian woman claims hipster café gave her a ‘racist’ receipt after she ordered raisin toast

  • A Sydney cafe has been slammed after writing ‘Asian’ on a receipt, not a name
  • Most cafes use a persons name when they take an order, this cafe used ethnicity
  • The woman was left shocked she saw the receipt for her take away raisin toast

A customer says a cafe gave her a supposedly racist receipt which described her ethnicity.

Katherine Chen had ordered her raisin toast to take away from a café in Sydney’s trendy Surry Hills but was surprised when she saw her receipt.

While some cafes use the customer’s name to identify whose order it is, this café chose to write the woman’s ethnicity as her identifier instead.

The word ‘Asian’ was printed in capital letters above her raisin toast order.

The 36-year-old, who is of Chinese descent, was the only customer in line at the time.

She was bemused when she saw the fumble.

‘Had I have been white, the docket would not have said ‘white’ or ‘caucasian’,’ she told Whimn.

Identifying her as Asian for her order seemed unnecessary and was another example of how Asians were still considered ‘other’, she said.

‘I also had a friendly chat with the person serving me – it would’ve been really easy to ask me my name.’
