Atlanta dad gets life in prison for revenge murder

Cleondre Franklin, 32, was sentenced to life plus five years in the murder of another dad

A gun-toting dad has been sentenced to life in prison for murdering the father of a girl who had accused his own daughter of bullying.

Cleondre Arlez Franklin, 32, was sentenced to life plus five years for the September 10, 2015 murder of Marvin Wiley in Atlanta, prosecutors in Fulton County, Georgia announced on Friday.

The shocking crime unfolded on a Thursday afternoon, when Wiley’s seven-year-old daughter came to him in tears after riding the school bus home.

She told him that Franklin’s daughter, age eight, had pulled her hair and taken her tablet away on the bus.

Enraged and brandishing a gun, Wiley drove with his brother as well as the daughter to Franklin’s home, prosecutors said.

There, Wiley confronted Franklin’s wife, Alimah Gray-Franklin, arguing heatedly and pointing the gun at her as Wiley’s daughter sat looking on from the car, according to the prosecution.

Gray-Franklin ran into the house and called Cleondre Franklin to tell him about the shocking confrontation, rather than calling 911 immediately, prosecutors said.

Franklin, now enraged and seeking his own revenge, got a description of Wiley’s car and began to seek him out in the neighborhood, prosecutors said.

Wiley fortunately had dropped off his young daughter and his brother at home before the incident came to a head.

Wiley was driving to the store and was less than a mile from Franklin’s home when he was shot in the head inside his car.

The victim’s brother found him dead after hearing the gunshots, and reported seeing Franklin’s car leaving the scene of the murder at high speed.

Franklin went on the run, but was arrested six weeks later in Rome, Georgia, about 75 miles away.

He admitted to shooting Wiley, but said it was in self-defense.

A jury did not agree, and convicted him on charges of malice murder, felony murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon on November 7.

Court records show that Franklin had a lengthy arrest record prior to the murder, on charges including gun and drug offenses, domestic assault and battery, and multiple counts of cruelty to children.
