Australia’s most ridiculous pet names are revealed

When it comes to naming pets, for Australians it seems food, phone apps and fictional characters are providing plenty of inspiration.

A survey of more than 270,000 dogs and cat owners by Medibank Pet Insurance revealed plenty of Jedis, Gandalfs and Pikachus among the most popular titles.

But pop culture references weren’t the only go-to, with some furry friends given weirder and wackier monikers including YouTube, Uber and even Meat Pie.

Lord of the Rings’ bearded wizard Gandalf was chosen for 27 pets, while fictional creature Pikachu from the Pokemon franchise influenced the naming of eight animals.

The name of Pirates of the Caribbean’s famous Captain Jack Sparrow was given to two pets, with another three people opting for Australia’s quintessential cuisine in calling their animal’s Meat Pie.

Among the other strange names recorded were Dog Dog, Gremlin Princess, iPug, Miss Australia, Notorious BIG, Purrlock Holmes, Rexona and Sweat Pants.

While one moniker that is likely very difficult to call out – Rose Coloured Chifon Swirl – was also given to a furry friend.

‘Human’ names were among the most popular though, with Bella, Charlie, Max, Molly and Ruby taking out the top five spots.

Medibank also revealed some of the most prevalent dog breeds, such as the Maltese Cross, Labrador, Golden Retriever, Border Collie and German Shepherd, 9News reports.
