Avril Lavigne details her battle with Lyme disease in new single ‘Head Above Water’

Avril Lavigne dropped her new single, Head Above Water, on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old singer, who was diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2014, detailed her health struggles in the heart-wrenching ballad.  

This is Avril’s first song since going on a five-year music hiatus.

Lavigne shared the song’s origin in an interview with PEOPLE.

‘One night, I thought I was dying, and I had accepted that I was going to die,’ she said. ‘My mom laid with me in bed and held me. I felt like I was drowning.’

Avril added: ‘Under my breath, I prayed “God, please help to keep my head above the water.” In that moment, the song writing of this album began. It was like I tapped into something. It was a very spiritual experience. Lyrics flooded through me from that point on.’

Since being diagnosed with the tick-born illness, Lavigne has focused her efforts on supporting individuals with Lyme disease through her self-titled non-profit, founded in 2010. 

‘We are excited to tell you that The Avril Lavigne foundation has expanded our mission to include providing PREVENTION resources, funding TREATMENT, and accelerating RESEARCH for Lyme disease,’ the Canada native shared just days ago.   

The non-profit’s partners include the Global Lyme Alliance, the Lymelight Foundation, Make-A-Wish, and Race To Erase MS.

Avril, who has been married twice, is currently dating billionaire beau Phillip Sorofim, 32.  

She was formerly wed to Canadian singer and Sum 41 rocker, Deryck Whibley, from 2006 until their divorce in 2010.

Lavigne then married Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger at a chateau near Cannes in 2013 before amicably separating in 2015.
