Bournemouth vs Liverpool: Have Klopp’s men improved?

Liverpool’s away defeat to Bournemouth last season highlighted the Reds’ flaws.

Two goals to the good at half-time and 3-1 up with 15 minutes remaining for any top team would have been a formality.

But conceding three goals in the latter stages of the game including a Bournemouth winner in the 93rd minute demonstrated a lack of leadership, defensive frailties and a goalkeeper that does not fill the side with confidence.

Liverpool return to the Vitality stadium just over a year on from that disaster but how much have Liverpool changed since?

Sportsmail looks at whether Klopp’s men have improved.

Goalkeeping

Loris Karius was to blame for Nathan Ake’s stoppage-time winner as the 24-year-old spilled Steve Cook’s initial effort into the path of the defender to allow him to stab the ball home.

His performance was heavily criticised by Sky Sports pundits Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville but Karius dismissed the criticism.

The German was installed by Klopp as the No 1 in September of the 2016-17 season and played the week after his error at home to West Ham.

But he failed to stop Dimitri Payet’s reachable free-kick which added more pressure on him.

After the 2-2 draw with the Hammers, Karius did not make another league appearance last season and made just five appearances in the domestic cup competitions.

This season Karius has played in Liverpool’s 4-0 league win over Arsenal in August and made his second league appearance of this campaign on Wednesday against West Brom as Simon Mignolet was injured.

Karius has been Klopp’s keeper in the Champions League and was part of the team that drew 3-3 with Sevilla after leading 3-0.

Mignolet has been the first choice this season in the league and although he has a mistake in him, he is more consistent.

Defence

The game against the Cherries was not the first or the last time the Liverpool defence have looked susceptible.

Klopp’s failure to bring in defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window means that the Reds are still likely to concede.

Since the dismal display at Wembley against Tottenham, it seemed as if Liverpool’s defence had improved after keeping two clean sheets against Huddersfield and Southampton.

But another calamity against Sevilla, including two errors from left back Alberto Moreno suggests Liverpool’s defensive problems remain.

Although, the defence that is likely to start against Eddie Howe’s men will be different to the back four that lined up last season.

Nathaniel Clyne is out injured, Lucas Leiva has moved on and James Milner is no longer the first-choice left back. So the only remaining player from that match is Dejan Lovren.

He endured a torrid afternoon against Mauricio Pochettino’s men but he seems to have put that behind him.

Whoever plays at right back, either Joe Gomez or Trent Alexander-Arnold, are capable of containing Bournemouth’s left flank.

Ragnar Klavan is expected to play alongside Lovren as Joel Matip is out injured while Scotland left back Andy Robertson will be keen to impress and show what he can do in Moreno’s absence.

Leaders

Captain Jordan Henderson played in the 4-3 defeat last year but other than that the Reds lacked leaders to see the game out.

This season Liverpool have more players that lead from the front, including the Premier League’s top goalscorer Mohamed Salah as well as playmaker Philippe Coutinho, who missed last season’s game due to injury.

Henderson wears the captain’s armband but the two attacking talents have the ability to take the game by the scruff of the neck and get the Reds over the line.

Away form

In the league Klopp’s side have won four games at home so far and have won the same amount away from home.

But the Reds have not lost a game at Anfield, whereas they lost 5-0 to Manchester City at the Etihad and were comfortably beaten by Spurs 4-1 at Wembley.

Liverpool have been held to five draws at home in the league, compared to just two draws on their travels.

Out of the four league games Bournemouth have won, two have come at home and they have also drawn two games out of four at home this season.

The Reds will need to be patient but they should avoid another humiliating comeback.
