Boy suffers burns as boiling water spilled on him in plane

A young boy has suffered burns to his leg after having boiling hot water spilled on him on a Virgin Australia flight.

Matthew Gibson, five, was burned when a cup of hot noodles was accidentally spilled onto him during a flight from Brisbane to Perth on August 10.

His mother claims a flight attendant spilt the liquid on young Matthew and didn’t provide adequate first aid – Virgin Australia strongly denied these claims to Daily Mail Australia.

‘It was steaming and he’s woken up just like screaming and I knew just knew instantly taken his pants off because I need to see what had happened,’ Matthew’s mother Jasmine Davis told Nine News.

Ms Davis claims the flight crew did not check Matthew’s burns with a light for 30 minutes, rather pouring cold water on his leg.

‘Nothing was hitting where it was burnt underneath, so he’s screaming,’ she said.

Cabin crews then put ice in a thin cloth to apply to his leg, Ms Davis claims.

She also claims she asked for gel to apply to the burn but was told there was none on-board.

Virgin Australia told Daily Mail Australia their crew have been trained to not apply gel immediately on burns and that all flights carry child pain relief on-board.

‘I’m still shocked that they said I could give him half of an adult aspirin, because I was in such a bad state of mind, trying to soothe my mind, I actually considered it for a second. I didn’t do it, because I was like, ‘no he’ll have a heart attack’,’ Ms Davis said.

Paramedics were alerted and met the family at Perth Airport where he was treated and taken to hospital.

Virgin Australia told Daily Mail Australia the safety of Matthew and all other guests were their ‘highest priority.’

‘Our crew immediately responded to this incident in line with their medical training and our standard safety procedures. We have contacted the guest’s family to offer support and provide assistance.’

The airline have offered the family a refund for their flights and to pay Matthew’s medical bills.
