Bride auction scene removed from Disneyland’s Pirates ride

Disneyland will be removing a scene of captive women being auctioned off as brides from its Pirates of the Caribbean ride.

The ride will be closing on April 23 so the Anaheim theme park can remove the infamous scene, reported the Orange County Register.

When the ride reopens around June 7, a new animatronic scene instead will feature a female pirate auctioning off loot.

Since 1967, guests have ridden on one of the ride’s small boats through several pirate-themed scenes before coming upon the bride auction.

In the scene, several unhappy-looking women are tied together as a pirate holds the end of the rope.

Above them is a sign that reads: ‘Auction: Take a Wench for a Bride’ and a rope-tied, redheaded woman, in a pink dress and matching hat, is up for bid when patrons arrive.

‘Hey, are you selling her by the pound?’ a pirate is heard yelling, while an auctioneer commands: ‘Shift yer cargo, dearie, show ’em your larboard side.’

However, the roles of the characters in the scene will be changed in the rework.

According to an artist’s rendering of the new scene, originally released in 2017, the redheaded woman will become a pirate herself, complete with a pirate hat and rifle.

Different people will be lined up to greet her carrying various goods and the sign above them will read: ‘Auction: Surrender Yer Loot’.

Disney first announced plans to remove the bride auction scene from the Pirates ride last summer.

This is not the first time the Pirates of the Caribbean ride has been changed. The original ride featured a scene showing pirates chasing frightened women.

In 1997, Disney closed the ride to alter the scene so the pirates were seen chasing a tray of alcohol that the women are holding, the Register reported.
