An aspiring young snake catcher is in hospital fighting for his life after one of the world’s deadliest taipans bit him in his home.

Nathan Chetcuti was putting his highly-venomous inland taipan back into its enclosure in his Brisbane home on Sunday afternoon when the reptile attacked him.

The 19-year-old is currently in hospital in intensive care as doctors attempt to save the life of the young animal lover.

Inland taipans, appropriately also known as the ‘fierce snake’, are regarded as having the most potent poison of any land snake in the world. Their poison can kill an adult in less than 45 minutes.

Mr Chetcuti owns dozens of snakes and lizards which he regularly posts photos and videos of online. Most of his animals are non-venomous.

It was the rare inland taipan however that delivered the potentially fatal blow.

It is believed Mr Chetcuti’s father was present at the time and immediately called Triple Zero. His quick actions may prove crucial in saving his son’s life.

He was rushed to Redcliffe Hospital where he remains in intensive care.
