Police had been called to the property by worried neighbours moments before the businessman, believed to be aged 40, fell from the first floor.

Local reports said he plunged and hit his head after ‘trying to flee’ officers as they reached the scene, around 11pm on Tuesday.

He was stabilised at the scene after being diagnosed with a severe head injury before being rushed to Son Espases where he remained in intensive care on Thursday morning.

Respected local paper Ultima Hora published a picture of the injured man with Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone, saying: ‘The British businessman is very well known and is friends with International celebrities and actors.’

It also quoted his partner, who is also understood to be British, denying suggestions she had been the victim of domestic violence by saying: ‘He had been out for some drinks and when he returned I told him to sleep on the sofa because we were rowing.

‘It’s true there was some shouting but the neighbours misinterpreted the situation.

‘He didn’t touch me. It’s just that it’s a small apartment and you can hear everything and the neighbours were alarmed.’

Trying to explain the seconds before the accident, when the Brit is believed to have tried to climb over a balcony as police reached the scene, she told the paper: ‘I don’t know what he wanted to do, I don’t understand it.

‘I heard the window of the balcony being opened and then a loud blow in the street and a yell. When I looked out he was on the ground. The police had still not arrived.’

Police on the island could not be reached early Thursday morning to comment on the incident.

No-one was immediately available at Son Espases.
