A British woman was saved in the Adriatic Sea after falling of a cruising ship.

The British woman, who has not been named, is said to have fallen into the sea from the cruise ship Norwegian Star while on route from the port of Vargarola near Pula, Croatia, in the northern Adriatic towards the south.

The incident happened around midnight between Saturday and Sunday, some 60 miles south from Pula.

A search was quickly launched and the Croatian Coast Guard patrol ship ‘Cavtat’ and an airplane PC-9 were engaged.

The woman was found and saved some ten hours later.

She was pulled out from the sea and was given medical help.

Cavtat ship captain Lovro Oreskovic said: ‘The British woman was exhausted when we pulled her out of the water. 

‘We were extremely happy for saving a human life.’

A Norwegian spokesperson, said: ‘A report was made that a guest aboard Norwegian Star had gone overboard while the ship was returning to Venice. 

‘As soon as the report was made the ship began a search and notified the appropriate authorities. The ship will be delayed on her return to Venice.’
