A child safety advocate has issued a stern ultimatum for ice-addicted parents: get clean or give up your children for adoption.

Hetty Johnston says the best interests of children are more important than those of parents, Nine News reported.

Her calls come as it is revealed one in three children taken into care in the past year in Queensland had a parent using ice.

Ms Johnston said children would be better off with adoptive parents than living with those under the influence of drugs.

‘If you’re high or stoned you’re not going to be the best parent you can be,’ she said.

She said the ice crisis was being made worse by the welfare system, which she claims encourages drug-addicted parents to have more children.

‘We know time and time again parents at parties  where evryones off their face on something or rather, kids are getting harmed parents who are drug takers will be highly visual to predators.’

New statistics show half of all reports of abuse and neglect in Queensland take a month for officials to begin investigating.

Only a third of those cases which are urgent are investigated within the recommended ten days.

‘At the end of the day the best interests of the child have to be more important than those of the parent,’ Ms Johnston said.
