Canberra, Sydney and Melbourne treated to warm weather

Australia’s east coast is heating up in the lead up to Christmas, but unfortunately the sweltering temperatures aren’t set to stay.

Tuesday saw Canberrans urged to keep cool and stay hydrated as the mercury pushed a scorching 39C, while Sydneysiders will be in for a warm Wednesday, with temperatures set to peak at 38C.

But the summer weather is set to disappear come Monday, with the weather dipping to the mid-twenties for most of the south-east.

Canberra’s blistering Tuesday was expected to come ‘very close’ to the city’s December record of 39.2C, Bureau of Meteorology’s Meteorologist Craig Ryan told Daily Mail Australia.

‘The overnight temperature is expected to be 21C as well, with the record currently standing at 21.2C, so we will be keeping an eye on that too,’ Mr Ryan said.

It comes as a heatwave crosses the Tasman seas, which will bring hot air down from the central parts, with Canberra set to experience another four days above 30C before things would cool down just in time for Christmas.

‘It could still be a bit muggy so that’s why we’re still thinking a few showers could be on the cards, maybe even a thunderstorm, for Christmas Day,’ Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jake Phillips told the ABC.

Up the coast, Sydneysiders are expected to flock to the beach on Wednesday, as temperatures reach a sweltering 38C.

It follows temperatures of 44C in parts of the New South Wales state on Tuesday, including at Penrith in the east.

But the warm weather won’t stick around long, dropping down to just 23C on Thursday and 25C Friday.

While temperatures will pick up again in time for the weekend, with Sunday set to hit 34C, those celebrating Christmas Day can expect conditions to sit in the mid twenties with a chance of showers.

‘There will be a change coming through later in the week, with some relief from the high temperatures,’ Mr Ryan said.
