Cancer patient walks up and stabs eminent Russian doctor

This is the sickening moment an eminent cancer doctor was fatally stabbed by a patient – soon after the medic had given him the all-clear.

Dr Igor Tyulenev is seen walking towards a hospital CCTV camera in his white coat when a man suddenly faces up to him and knifes him in the chest.

The doctor falls back on a row of chairs in his clinic in the Russian Arctic city of Murmansk.

He then manages to forcibly kick away his attacker, and is even seen running for help.

However, colleagues said he was fatally wounded, and died soon after the appalling stabbing despite his fellow doctors doing all they could to save his life.

His attacker – a 67 year old patient who had been recently told by Dr Tyulenev that he was clear of cancer – then stabbed himself with the same knife and died at the hospital.

The unnamed attacker had been a patient at other cancer clinics in Murmansk before seeing Dr Tyulenev.

He had become convinced he was suffering from cancer and that doctors were hiding it from him, according to NTV.

Shortly before the appalling stabbing, Dr Tyulenev, in his late 50s, had assured the man test results gave him the all-clear from cancer.

‘Portmortem analyses has also confirmed that the attacker did not have cancer,’ said a spokesman from the Russian Investigative Committee, seen as an equivalent of the FBI.

A source at the clinic said: ‘Our intensive care doctors did all they could to rescue Igor, but his wounds were fatal.

‘The attacker was delivered into the same intensive care operating theatre, and another team worked to rescue him, too, but to no avail.’

On the day he stabbed the doctor, the man did not have an appointment.

Other patients praised the murdered medic who had worked at the cancer hospital for 25 years alongside his wife, who was also a doctor here.

‘He was an exceptionally good doctor,’ said one.

‘He removed my grandmother’s lymphoma, this is her seventh healthy year after the surgery…’

Another said: ‘I was due to see him next week. What a tragedy. He was one of a kind, patients would forever queue up to see him.’

He was also described as ‘incredibly caring and gentle, if somewhat reserved. Such an incredible loss.’

The doctor died on 9 August at Murmansk Region Cancer Clinic but the video was released only now.

An investigation is continuing into the murder.

Russian politicians have called for greater security at hospitals – including metal detector tests at entrances – to stop such attacks.
