Car explodes in a massive fireball on Sydney’s busy M4

  • A red 4WD went up in flames on Sydney’s Western Motorway Tuesday afternoon 
  • Crews extinguished the blaze shortly after 1pm, but it caused major delays 
  • Two westbound lanes were closed as other drivers dealt with the aftermath

A vehicle engulfed in flames on the M4 Western Motorway in Sydney’s west has caused huge traffic delays. 

Emergency services were called to an overpass above James Ruse Drive, Clyde, at around 1:10pm to attend to the car on fire, 9 News reported. 

Within seven minutes fire crews were able to extinguish the blaze, a Fire and Rescue NSW spokeswoman said.

The occupants of the car were believed to have escaped and removed their belongings before the car went up in flames. 

‘The car doesn’t appear to have crashed,’ a NSW Police spokeswoman said.

Two of four westbound lanes were closed and police urged drivers to exercise caution.  

Police are now investigating the cause of the car fire.
