‘He thought I couldn’t do it’: Cassandra Thorburn reveals the real reason she joined Dancing with the Stars… after her performance was slammed by judges as a ‘failure’

Cassandra Thorburn joined Dancing with the Stars in the hope of turning over a new leaf in life.

The 47-year-old, however, has an even deeper reason for learning to dance and appearing on the reality show.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, the former journalist says it was her son, Jackson, who motivated her the most – by insisting she cannot dance.

‘I went to Jackson, my eldest, and I said, “I think I’m going to do DWTS” and he turned and said “No, you’re not – you can’t f***ing dance”. And right then and there I decided it was time I learnt to dance.’

She added: ‘So I signed up. If Jackson – who did 10 years of ballet – thinks I can’t dance then I’m going to learn to dance.’

The comments come after Cassandra says she joined the show in order to change the perceptions of those who saw her as Karl Stefanovic’s wife.

She told Confidential: ‘There’s the Cass that people think of as the former Mrs Stefanovic. I was never a Mrs Stefanovic. I have always been Cass Thorburn’.

The mother-of-three added that her role on Dancing with the Stars will give her the opportunity to be herself.

‘It is a fresh start to a new year and a great outlook… I can control being able to present myself as me,’ she said.

However the author’s first performance on the dance show was savaged by the judges.

The former journalist performed the Viennese waltz to Nina Simone’s hit Feeling Good, where the lyrics ‘a new day, a new dawn’ alluded to her new chapter.

While she said she felt ‘beautiful, confident and happy’ with her performance, one of the judges Craig Revel Horwood gave her harsh criticism.

Giving her a score of just one, Craig told Cassandra: ‘Frankly it was a failure!’
