Fabregas took on Barcelona for the first time since leaving for the Blues in 2014.

But it was a stalemate as Willian’s second-half opener was cancelled out by Messi’s strike with 15 minutes remaining.

Messi had not scored in eight previous encounters against Chelsea but he managed to break his goal duck.

Andres Iniesta capitalised on a loose pass across goal from Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen and cut the ball back to Messi, who coolly slotted the ball home.

The last-16 tie is finely poised going into the return leg at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, March 14.
