Cheerleaders hilariously misspell words when they challenge each other to quick-fire spelling tests at a national competition.

The clip, posted to Twitter last week, captures the Indiana University cheer team as they relax between performances at an event.

But when the cheerleaders least expect it, the girls challenge each other to spell words as quickly as possible ‘without thinking about it’.

One team member struggles to remember there's a silent 'p' in 'Pterodactyl' when the word is yelled at her

The team then blurt out some creative answers as they attempt to spell the words as fast as possible.

When asked to spell ‘Gatorade’, one girl, who is sat scrolling through her phone, screams out an unintelligible response.

Another cheerleader is then challenged to spell ‘instrument’ as she lies in bed.

She responds: ‘I n n s t r u m p’.

A team member then approaches her friend as they sit on the ground and yells ‘chocolate milk’.

She responds ‘Chee o charle’ before bursting into laughter.

The clip goes on to capture other girls being asked to spell ‘championship’ – ‘champf’ – and ‘hairspray’ – ‘h a r s spray’ – until one cheerleader finally spells a word correctly.

The girl, who is sat in a practice hall, successfully spells ‘pepperoni’. Similar success is also had with ‘hurricane’ during the tough tests.

One girl, Kaylie Kindler, loudly yells only the letter ‘p’ when she’s asked to spell ‘peppermint’.

But the cheerleader does spell words including ‘nationals’ and ‘Mickey Mouse’  correctly at lightning speed.

Ms Kindler, who posted the clip to Twitter, said: ‘Last year at nationals we decided to randomly yell words at each other and then try to spell them as quickly as possible without thinking about it.

‘These were the results.’
