Chelsea ‘downed tools’ in Champions League loss: Dixon

  • Chelsea’s players gave up in Champions League defeat to Roma, says Lee Dixon
  • Blues beaten 3-0 in Italian capital with at least one goal down to defensive errors
  • Ex-Arsenal defender Dixon feels it is down to the individual mindsets of players

Chelsea’s players appeared to give up in their Champions League defeat to Roma, according to Lee Dixon – who suggested there could be a deep rooted mentality problem at the club.

The Blues were beaten 3-0 in the Italian capital, with at least one of the goals down to defensive errors.

Former Arsenal and England defender Dixon feels it is down to the individual mindsets of players, who have dropped their levels since winning the Premier League last season.

Speaking on ITV, Dixon said: ‘Not for the first time this season defensively they were all over the place.

‘By the end the numbers don’t matter, they look like they have downed tools, that’s the more alarming thing, that they look like players who have given up.

‘It all goes down to the players individually, if you’ve got it in you to drop your level that low – as good as they are when they are good – if you have got that in you, it never leaves you.’

Keane said: ‘I’ve not seen such bad defending as that for a long time. There are clearly problems at the club.

‘They are missing one or two players with injury but they clearly downed tools at the end there. There are huge problems for Chelsea going forward.’
