Ciara blasted for ‘shaming single women’

Ciara has been slammed on social media for sharing a pastor’s message that appeared to criticize single women.

The singer shared the video on Saturday of pastor John Gray’s sermon with the quote: ‘Too many women want to be married but you’re walking in the spirit of “girlfriend.”‘

Ciara, who is happily married to Seattle Seahawks’ Russell Wilson, then wrote a caption of her on, telling women to ‘#LevelUp. Don’t Settle’.

The controversial post quickly drew attention from several folks in the Twitterverse who accused the singer of shaming single women.

‘Here we go. Society force feeds women this same ideal that we need to be a certain way for men. Hence, the vid Ciara posted. It’s not an ideal pressed on to men. This, the demand exists while women keep believing the bull,’ one user wrote.

Another user said that ‘these types of messages are so toxic to women’.

‘Your value does not depend on a man wanting you and marriage is not the be all and end all,’ the user continued.

Other social media users slammed Ciara for having a kid with Future despite the fact that they did not tie the knot.

‘#Ciara You weren’t “walking in the spirit” when you got pregnant with Future’s son OUT OF WEDLOCK. Now run & tell that!’ one user tweeted.

‘You have two kids by two different men. Sit this one out Ciara,’ another said.

CiCi Adams, a reporter for People Magazine said that she's 'disappointed' that Ciara 'shared something so silly'

The video that Ciara shared shows Pastor Gray giving a sermon in front of a large audience when he says: ‘You are not a wife when I marry you, you are a wife when I find you. You become my wife when I marry you. But a wife’s not the presence of a ring, it is the presence of your character.

‘Too many women want to be married, but you are walking in the spirit of a girlfriend,’ the pastor preached.

Adams then went after Gray in her tweet: ‘What pastor John Gray is saying here is intellectually lazy and a twisting of scripture.’

‘Ciara’s doing what many women do when they overcome trials and then get married. She is using her marital status as a weapon against other women who aren’t married. And it is clear that she has tied her value and sense of self-worth to her marriage, otherwise, she would not have shared that,’ Adams pointed out.

And despite the backlash, there were twice as many folks who had Ciara’s back.

One user said people should be mad about the government shutdown instead of criticizing Ciara.

‘I was confused as to why #Ciara was trending. All I see is her saying is do better, and don’t settle for less. Maybe I’m just not understanding,’ another wrote.

The songstress later released a statement on Instagram addressing her controversial post.

‘I was once that girl wanting to be loved a certain way but was making the wrong choices. I found myself at my lowest moment.

‘I was a single mom sitting at home, and I then realized that the perfect love I was looking for was how God loves me, how He wants me to be loved, and who He was calling me to be as a mom and a woman.

‘Thats when I realized married or not married… I needed to love myself. #LevelUp.’
