Colorado hikers help save dog trapped in old mining shaft

Colorado hikers saved a helpless dog who had been trapped in an old mining shaft for about 10 days.

Preston Gladd was hiking near the Beaver Creek area of Fairplay earlier this month when he heard sounds coming from a cave, according to his girlfriend, Portia Scovern’s Facebook post.

‘He thought it was a wild animal so he did not investigate,’ Scovern wrote in the caption of the rescue video.

Video of the dramatic rescue shows the malnourished dog, named Cheynne, wagging her tail as she hears the voices of her rescuers.

‘Hi buddy! We’re going to get you!’ Scovern is heard saying in the video.

The clip then cuts to Gladd at the bottom of the mine shaft as he attempts to move a broken ladder.

Moments later, the video shows the dehydrated pooch drinking water and eating dog food that Scovern and her friend brought with them.

‘I know you’re so small. Aww you’re so cute. You’re so skinny,’ Scovern is heard saying in the video as she dumps a bottle of water into a bowl.

According to Scovern, Cheynne didn’t have any injuries despite the 20-foot fall.

‘She is underweight and dehydrated, but we are shocked that she has no injuries after a 20ft fall,’ Scovern wrote.

Scovern said the dog had not been ‘reported missing at any vet or police station and she is not microchipped’.

Within 24 hours, after Scovern’s Facebook post went viral, the owner of the dog was found. The owner has not been identified.
