Comedian Kathy Griffin hits back over Donald Trump photo

Comedian Kathy Griffin has hit back at Sunrise host Sam Armytage over the infamous photo of her holding a decapitated head of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Appearing on the show ahead of her stand-up comedy tour of Australia later this year, Griffin was asked by Armytage if the photo of the comedian holding a Trump mask with fake blood was a step too far.

‘Even Democrats said it was out of line, I get that comedy is about pushing the boundaries… but do you not agree that that picture holding up a severed head – I know it’s a mask covered in tomato sauce – but do you not accept that was a little bit over the line?’ Armytage asked.

Griffin’s reply was feisty and direct, as she said Armytage was ‘full of crap’.

‘Stop acting like my little picture is more important than talking about the actual atrocities that the president of the United States is committing.’

After the photo of Griffin posing with the decapitated head went viral in July, Trump himself hit out at her on Twitter saying she ‘should be ashamed of herself’ and that his children ‘especially my 11-year-old son Barron’ were troubled by it.

Griffin was investigated by the Secret Service for the photo.

Although she issued a tearful apology after copping criticism and even death threats for the photo, the comedian said she is no longer sorry.

‘No I don’t apologise for that photo anymore and I think the outrage is complete BS, because we have real things to deal with.’

Griffin attempted to make light of the awkward exchange as the interview came to a close.

‘I’m in trouble, according to you Sam, way to take my back girl,’ Griffin said.

‘I’m a journalist Kathy I’m here to ask you questions,’ Armytage said, while also explaining she was ‘playing the devil’s advocate’.

‘I know your type, I’ve got your number Sam,’ Griffin replied.

‘You’re like a white Trump voter in America, I know your deal.

‘That’s it, I’m going to meet you in an alley and we’re going to exchange beauty tips… Look I’ve got to make fun of this stuff, it’s so ridiculous, it’s so over the top.’

Armytage and co-host David Koch ended the interview saying they would be attending one of Griffin’s shows.
