Cruel workers kill piglets by slamming their heads against the floor

Harrowing footage taken using undercover surveillance at an agricultural co-op in Germany shows piglets being killed by having their heads slammed against the floor.

German animal rights group Animal Rights Watch (ARIWA) released the video of pig-stall workers killing piglets in Neuzelle, in the north-eastern state of Brandenburg.

According to ARIWA, the footage was taken in June 2018 with hidden cameras in one of the pig stalls belonging to the German firm Agricultural Cooperative Neuzelle.

The video shows workers slamming piglets’ heads against the floor and the edges of the stalls, sometimes in front of the eyes of the pigs’ mothers.

Some piglets do not die immediately but lie struggling on the floor while the workers pick up the other struggling animals and kill them.

The piglets were reportedly healthy and killed only because of their size and because raising them would have been unprofitable.

According to the German veterinary guidelines, piglets can be killed only if they are weak, nonviable, badly injured or deformed.

The agricultural cooperative distanced itself from the acts shown on the video.

They said: ‘If there has been violation by employees, we deeply regret that. Possible violations will be sanctioned.’

A spokesman for the Brandenburg’s State Farmers’ Union said: ‘This contradicts the Animal Protection Law as well as our ethical sense.’

ARIWA has filed charges against the agricultural cooperative, as the public prosecutor’s office confirmed.

This is not the first time the activists have uncovered such killing of piglets in Germany – they released similar videos in 2014 and 2016 but said that unfortunately nothing has changed since as piglets are still brutally killed.

The Ministry for Consumer Protection stated they assumed most of the businesses in the country respected animal welfare.

They added they could not comment any further on this most recent case before the public prosecutor’s office finishes their investigation.
