Desperate hunt for Birmingham boy who has been missing for two days

A heavily-pregnant mother has launched a desperate appeal to find her 12-year-old son who left the family home two days ago.

Selina Tonge, 29, has not slept since Shane Pinder vanished on Friday and he is without his phone after she took it away because of his bad behaviour.

Speaking two days after she last saw him she said it is ‘the worst feeling in the world’ not knowing where he is.

The schoolboy failed to return from lessons at Wheeler’s Lane Technology College in Kings Heath, Birmingham.

He was spotted at 11.30am on Sunday in the Hawkesley and Kings Norton area of Birmingham but the desperate hunt to find him continues.

Speaking before he was spotted, Miss Tonge said: ‘As a mum, it’s the worst feeling in the world not knowing where your child is. Nobody knows what this feels like.

‘I’m praying he is with friends. He is not in any trouble, I just want him back home with me.’

West Midlands Police were alerted after Shane failed to return to their home in Birmingham by his usual time of 4.30pm.

Miss Tonge added: ‘He is always home without fail by 4.30pm. I was concerned when he wasn’t back at that time.

‘Shane’s dad wanted me to call the police but I thought he must be out with friends. But, when we came to 7pm and he still wasn’t home, I felt sick.

‘Shane is a very sociable, chatty boy. He will speak to anyone. Someone must have seen him.

‘He is very street-smart and knows all the bus routes in the area but he doesn’t like to be away from home – not even at weekends.’

Miss Tonge lives with her partner, Shane’s father Warren Pinder and the couple have four other children and she is due to give birth in May.

She said Shane had been angry on Friday because she had confiscated his phone as punishment for bad behaviour at home.

Miss Tonge added: ‘He had been playing up so we took his phone away.

‘So at first I thought he was just sulking but it’s well over 24 hours now and I’m scared.

‘His brothers and sisters are asking me so many questions. They miss him badly and so are we.

‘We just want him to know he’s not in any trouble, we just want him home.’

Miss Tonge said police had contacted all Shane’s known friends.

Shane was last seen at Hockley Circus at around 4.10pm on Friday.

He is 5ft with light brown, short hair, a fair complexion and freckles on his cheeks.

Shane was wearing a black school uniform with a white shirt and grey tie, a dark blue parka coat with fur around the collar and blue Nike Airmax trainers with white soles.

Detective Inspector Scott Shaw, of West Midlands Police, said: ‘It’s really important that Shane knows he’s not in any trouble, and that we just want to find him safe and well.

‘Shane – your mum and dad are really worried and all they want is for you to be back with them at home as soon as possible.

‘We’ve got specialist teams, neighbourhood and response officers as well as the Locate missing persons unit and Force CID all working to achieve that.’

Anyone with information should call West Midlands Police on 101.
