Disney to name Melbourne’s Etihad Stadium ‘Marvel Stadium’ and may promote movies like The Avengers

Superheros could be taking centre stage at football games as Etihad Stadium is renamed following a Disney deal.

The popular AFL stadium will be known as Marvel Stadium in coming months after an eight year agreement was made between the two companies.

The ‘marvelous’ name will coincide with a Marvel store, who are the brains behind The Avengers, in an attempt to promote superheros at football games.

Melbourne Stadiums Limited CEO Michael Green said Marvel was a ‘powerhouse in the entertainment industry’ with global significance, The Age reported.

‘It is a brand dedicated to audience experiences, which firmly aligns with our vision to create incredible experiences for fans.

‘This partnership will allow us to take the stadium atmosphere to the next level and create memorable experiences for a vast array of audiences and we look forward to delivering at truly game-changing experience.’

The renaming comes a decade after the Melbourne stadium was changed from Telstra Dome, which was previously called Colonial Stadium, with many people sharing their divided opinions online.

‘Etihad Stadium being renamed Marvel Stadium feels like a football to the groin,’ someone wrote.

‘If I don’t see Thor and Hulk Fight there, I will be so disappointed,’ one person wrote.

‘This is made up yes?,’ another person said.

Many questioned whether the decision was a ‘late April Fool’s joke’ and took aim at the number of name changes the stadium has had.
