Chinese media said that he had painted the lens so that neither he nor any other drivers breaking the speed limit could be fined and have their licences endorsed.

After the quick act of vandalism, the driver skulked back to his cab in the footage thought to have been shot in the dead of night.

He was also reported to have pulled the same trick on another nearby camera, covering the other side of carriageway.

But the crafty driver had not realised that he was being filmed on CCTV.

Police were able to use the footage to identify him and arrested him shortly afterwards. He was ordered to pay a fine of £113.45 and he was jailed for 15 days.

The man was not named in reports and it was not clear whether he worked for himself or for an employer, and if so whether the offence would affect his employment.
