61.6% of the twelve million plus respondents in Australia’s Gay Marriage survey returned a ‘yes’ vote.
Seconds after the result was announced on Wednesday, local and international celebrities flooded social media with celebratory posts.
Leading the charge was Ellen DeGeneres, who along with Australian wife Portia De Rossi, was personally invested in the outcome.

Miley Cyrus, who is also dating an Australian in Liam Hemsworth, joined-in, posting a heartfelt message on social media.
‘Yes!!!!! Congrats Australia! Every step taken is one closer to World Peace! Love love love you! Proud to be Australian by association lol’ she wrote.

Clearly overjoyed, she took to Instagram alongside a ‘love wins’ image, writing: ‘Yessss! #ssm #yes #australia.’
Bachelorette Sophie Monk wasn’t going to miss out on the celebrations either, hitting the caps lock key over on Instagram.

The postal survey on same sex marriage in Australia was mailed out in September with full results announced on Wednesday.
The postal survey is not binding, but Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has committed to allow a free vote on same sex marriage in Australia before Christmas.
As Parliament shuts down from December 7, it’s likely there would be a vote before then.
