England’s summer begins at Lord’s on Thursday as Joe Root’s side welcome Pakistan to the home of cricket for the first of two Test matches between the teams.

Jos Buttler is set to return to Test cricket, making his first appearance since December 2016 against India.

Spinner Dominic Bess, 20, is also in line to make his Test debut against Pakistan after Moeen Ali was left out of the squad following a difficult winter against Australia and New Zealand.

‘He’s a very confident young man with a lot of energy and he’s very clear about what he wants to do in the game and how he will approach this week,’ Root said of Bess.

‘We hope he makes a good start to what will become a long international career.’

Opening batsman Alastair Cook, meanwhile, will play his 153rd consecutive Test match for England, equalling a record set by Australian Allan Border.

Root has one selection quandary between Mark Wood and Chris Woakes for the final bowling spot in his team.

The captain will bat at No 3 in England’s order, with Jonny Bairstow coming in at five and Buttler taking seventh in the order.

GLEN WILLIAMS brings you all the live action while PAUL NEWMAN and LAWRENCE BOOTH will have updates from Lord’s.
