Father and daughter duo help free hedgehog which was being strangled by plastic label

A hedgehog found himself in a bit of a pickle when he got entangled in some plastic wrapping.

Newly-named Sonic needed a helping hand to free himself from the litter after getting trapped.

Caring father and daughter duo, Georgia and Gary Buck, of Sittingbourne, Kent, noticed the animal was being throttled by the throwaway plastic bottle label so decided to catch him.

Footage shows the pair working together to free the animal from his unwanted collar.

Georgia, 18, who works for Sainsbury’s, grabbed the spiky animal while engineer father Gary, 49, used clippers to cut it off.

The hog, who is only a juvenile, was one of a litter that live in the Bucks’ back garden.

The duo rescued his mother after she was injured in a road accident nearby and bought a ‘hogitat’ so she could live safely away from the road.

But within a few weeks of her rescue, she surprised the Bucks by having a huge litter of babies.

Georgia said: ‘The plastic was stopping him breathing, it was so tight it was cutting off his circulation.

‘Without us cutting it off, he would almost certainly have died in a few days.

‘It really does make you think about dropping litter because this is what happens if you do.

‘Sonic is fine now and snuggled up with his mother, which is great.’

Hedgehog numbers have plummeted in recent years, halving since 2000.

There are now thought to be only around a million left, a huge decline from the 30m estimated to have roamed the countryside in the 1950s.

Experts have blamed the loss of suitable habitats, including hedgerows, increased use of pesticides, more being killed on roads and intensive farming.

Hugh Warwick, of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, said: ‘It is always wonderful when people are able to intervene and help save wildlife.

‘The tragedy is that so often it is because of the careless stupidity of other people that heroes need to act.’
