Father killed after car smashed into him at 200 km/h

A father has tragically lost his life after his car burst into flames when a driver smashed into his car at speeds in excess of 200km/h.

The 49-year-old father-of-one was driving his luxury Mercedes through Melbourne early on Saturday morning when a Mazda sedan tailed-ended him, causing him to collide with a light post.

The Mazda spun out and crashed into parked cars at a dealership as the Mercedes ignited.

‘This is a big crash,’ Detective Sergeant Mark Amos said. ‘It’s catastrophic in every sense of the word.’

The incident occurred just after 2am on Waverley Road in Glen Waverley, south-east of the CBD.

The driver of the Mazda, aged in his 30s, was described by witnesses as driving like ‘lightning’ and may at one stage have been driving on the wrong side of the road.

He was captured by a speed camera moments before the crash, which will indicate the exact speed he was travelling, but the spedometer in his vehicle was locked at 220km/h when police observed the wreckage.

‘To be honest Blind Freddy could tell you there’s going to be some element of speed in this collision,’ detective sargeant Mark Amos said.

‘We’ve got nothing to suggest there has been a race. We’ve got a couple of witnesses, generally we’re getting indications of speed and some sort of erratic behaviour.’
