Fiat Chrysler announces recall of pickup trucks

Fiat Chrysler said a defective water pump could lead to engines catching on fire o Tuesday

Fiat Chrysler is recalling almost half a million Ram heavy-duty pickups and medium-duty trucks because their water pumps could be defective.

The recall involves Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs from the 2013 to 2017 model years. All 494,417 of the vehicles involved have 6.7-liter engines.

Most of the trucks were sold in the US, but 46,220 are in Canada and 4,485 are in other markets.

Fiat Chrysler says a water pump bearing can overheat under certain conditions, potentially leading to an engine fire.

The company isn’t aware of any injuries or accidents related to the defect.

It no longer uses the type of water pump involved in the recall.

Fiat Chrysler will notify customers and dealers will fix or replace the water pumps for free.

Earlier this year, Fiat was forced to recall nearly 300,000 vehicles due to faulty wiring, which the company said may have led to instances of inadvertent air bag deployments.

The recall of 2011-2012 model year Dodge Grand Caravan minivans is linked to eight minor injuries, the automaker said, after initially reporting 13 injuries.

Wiring may short-circuit, resulting in the driver-side air bag deploying without warning.

Over the past several years, automakers have been recalling tens of millions of vehicles for a series of air bag problems, mainly tied to Takata Corp 7312.T inflators.

More than a dozen automakers have called back 46 million Takata air bag inflators in 29 million US vehicles that can rupture and emit deadly metal fragments.

By 2019, automakers will recall 64 million to 69 million U.S. inflators in 42 million vehicles, US regulators said in December.
