Several students in Maryland were injured Monday morning when their school bus flipped over on the highway.

Howard County police said that Tyra India Wilcox, 50, lost control of the school bus on Route 29 in Ellicott City just before 7am.

The incident left two 15-year-old girls, the bus driver, a school aide and another motorist injured.

All five were taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Wilcox, who was driving to Mt. Hebron High School when the accident occurred, was issued a ticket for negligent driving.

‘In this situation, investigators determined that driver was driving too fast, even regardless of road or weather conditions, so she’s been charged with negligent driving,’ Sherry Llewellyn, a Howard County police spokeswoman, told NBC News affiliate WBAL.

The Howard County Public School System later released a statement, saying that Wilcox has been suspended pending an investigation into the incident.

According to police, the bus fell on its side as it was traveling westbound on Route 100 and exited onto Route 29 north.

That’s when another car, a 2005 Toyota Matrix, hit the bus.

Authorities said the highway was closed for about two hours after the crash.

‘We’re grateful that no life-threatening injuries resulted from this accident,’ the Howard County School System continued.

‘We appreciate the tremendous efforts of first responders to ensure the safety and health of every person involved and providing the quick and safe transport for medical care,’ they added.
