Game Of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau reveals there are ‘very few happy endings’

He convincingly portrayed Jaime Lannister — a man who embarks on an illicit incestuous love affair with his cold-hearted sister Cersei in Game Of Thrones.

And Nikolaj Coster-Waldau revealed unsurprisingly there are ‘very few happy endings’ in the HBO series as he graced the cover of Modern Luxury’s April edition.

However, the actor, 48, stopped fans from fretting as he insisted the TV bosses didn’t put a ‘complete downer’ on how the tangled storylines unfold in the final chapter.

He told the magazine of the ending: ‘There’s a pride to being part of something that didn’t overstay its welcome. The producers did an amazing job. It’s so tricky because the world is so vast. 

‘There’s so many storylines. They found the balance between the beginning and the ending. There’s very few happy endings in that world. They did a great job in not being complete downers about it, but also being true to that world.’ 

Fans will be scrambling for the remote on April 14 when the hotly-anticipated season eight premieres on the HBO channel.

In one of the closing sequences of season seven, Nikolaj’s character Jaime was told he was going to become a father again.

Fans have been divided over whether Cersei (Lena Headey) is really pregnant with their fourth child or whether she is trying to manipulate her brother.

He said: ‘What I love about my job is you try to examine why we act the way we do… what it means to be human, Jaime has this messed up romantic relationship with Cersei, his sister, but then you think about, well, maybe he wants to fall in love with someone he shouldn’t fall in love with…

‘I knew this was a great character the first time I read the script. His motives were, as he said himself, “the things I do for love.” He wants to protect his family, and he’s willing to do whatever it takes.’

Fans are also hugely interested in Jaime’s unlikely friendship with Brienne of Tarth after they bonded when she escorted him back to his family in handcuffs. 

At the time when they were sworn enemies, she was offering him up to the Lannisters in exchange for the Stark girls on behalf of their mother Lady Catelyn.

Of course Gwendoline Christie had high praise for the actor as she gushed over him bringing her ‘pleasure’ as well as expressing her admiration for his ‘strong jawline’.
