Gary Oldman leads Brits tipped for Oscar glory

Gary Oldman is at the helm of the Brits tipped for Oscar glory at the 90th Academy Awards in Mark, as it was revealed on Tuesday he has been nominated for the Best Actor Award for Darkest Hour. 

The 59-year-old star, who was nominated for the same gong in 2012, has been given the nod for his role as Winston Churchill in the movie, which joins fellow British blockbuster Dunkirk in leading the way with top awards. 

Dunkirk has garnered eight nominations, including top categories such as Best Picture, Director and Cinematography, while Darkest Hour will go head-to-head with the film for Best Picture and Cinematography.

Gary has been nominated for Best Actor for his turn as Churchill in the film which depicts the start of his leadership before leading to his treaty with Nazi Germany.

It is Gary’s second nod for Best Actor after he was nominated in 2012 for his role as George Smiley in 2011’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

At Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild awards, the Harry Potter star was seen to break down as he was lauded with the Award for Outstanding Performance – just days after taking home the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for the role.

Three out of the five best actor nominees are Brits with Daniel Day-Lewis, who holds dual citizenship between Ireland and the UK, up for The Phantom Thread and Londoner Daniel Kaluuya up for Get Out.

The other awards Darkest Hour is in the running for is Best Picture, Cinematography for Bruno Delbonnel, Production Design, Make-up And Hair and Costume Design.

Meanwhile, the other British film to lead the way was Dunkirk – also set in WW2 – and featuring an all-star cast including Cillian Murphy, Tom Hardy and Harry Styles. 

The movie has been given eight nominations with nods for Best Picture, Director for Christopher Nolan, Cinematography for Hoyte van Hoytema, Film Editing for Lee Smith, sound editing for Alex Gibson and Richard King, Production Design and Original Score for Hans Zimmer.

Victoria And Abdul was a strong contender in the artistic categories, with a position in both the Make-Up And Hair and Costume Design categories. 

American-Irish star Saoirse Ronan has been lauded with her third Oscar nomination at the tender age of 23, with a nod for Best Actress in Ladybird following her nomination in the same category in 2016 and Best Supporting Actress in 2008.

Of his role as Churchill, Gary previously told Interview Magazine: ‘The challenge of playing someone like Winston Churchill is that there’s more footage of him than you might believe, and there’s certainly enough to read about. 

‘Next to Washington, I think he has the most biographies about him. And then there’s his own writing, which is something like 50 books. I haven’t read all of them, but I’m told every one of them is worth reading. 

‘He changed political parties twice. He fought with distinction in four wars, he served in politics, I think, for over 50 years, and he held almost every political office.’
