Gay fathers whose daughter wants baby by surrogate

The teenage daughter of Barrie and Tony Drewitt-Barlow has spoken out about her quest to become a mother and donating her ‘spare’ embryos to her fathers.

Saffron Drewitt-Barlow appeared alongside her fathers and boyfriend Scott Hutchison on Good Morning Britain today to discuss her plans to become a first-time mother through surrogacy.

She revealed how her plans angered her father Tony, who is currently undergoing surgery for throat cancer.

Barrie and Tony, self-made millionaires originally from Essex, made history as the first gay men in the UK to legally father children through surrogacy in 1999.

Their daughter will see the same fertility expert who made her and twin brother Aspen for Barrie and Tony, who she calls daddy and dad.

Saffron wants to contribute the embryos from the IVF process to her fathers, so they can expand their own family.

Miss Drewitt-Barlow admitted her fathers, who built up a £40million fortune via medical testing businesses, were ‘deeply shocked’ when she revealed her own plans to start a family with her boyfriend.

She said she and her father Tony, 53, who is seriously ill with complications following cancer, didn’t speak for two days.

Miss Drewitt-Barlow said she ‘always knew’ she wanted to be a young mother but ‘couldn’t face’ nine months of carrying her babies.

She told GMB: ‘I’ve watched my parents go through four failed IVF attempts in the UK and it was hard to see my parents go through that.

‘I want my parents to see my children in case anything does happen [to my dad], since he’s ill.’

When asked what they thought of Saffron’s plan, Barrie said: ‘To be really honest when she first said that she wanted a baby we said, “that will be really nice in the future” – but she said right now.

‘The we said absolutely if that’s what you want, then go for it.

‘She said she didn’t want to carry it herself, she wanted a surrogate.

‘But I’m like “you’re a woman carry it yourself, that would be such a joyful thing for you.”

‘She’s adamant she doesn’t want to do it herself. I do think Saffron should try carrying it herself.’

Scott Hutchison, who used to be Barrie’s personal assistant, admitted the arrangement was odd.

He and Miss Drewitt-Barlow have been dating for two years and plan to marry.

Mr Hutchison told GMB: ‘Saffron is my princess so I respect whatever route she wants to go down.

‘I’m down for for whatever she wants to do.’

Host Susanna Reid pointed out Saffron would be donating her own children to become ‘her aunts and uncles’.

But the 18-year-old said they would continue to be her children, brought up by her fathers.

Saffron added: ‘They are going to my kids brought up by my parents. They are my kids brought up by their grandparents.

‘To be honest I’ve never really had to explain my family set up to many people.’
