A pet dog has been turning heads in China after it was seen hitching a ride on the back of its owner’s pedicab.

Video footage circulating online shows the giant Tibetan Mastiff dwarfing its owner as it sits on the back of the vehicle.

Once exclusively bred in China’s south-western Tibet region, the breed is famous for its massive size and ferocious temperament as a working dog.

Viewers on social media were quick to point out the unusual breed – which are regularly bought for sky-high prices in China, where they are considered something of a status symbol.

One Tibetan mastiff reportedly sold for a whopping 12 million RMB (£1.4 million) in 2014. 

The dogs are still used today by tribespeople to protect livestock from predators such as wolves, leopards, tigers and even bears.

Several reports from China this year said police had to shoot dead privately owned Tibetan Mastiffs after they turned on their owners and attacked them – some causing serious injury.

The pooches, however, still remain high on the list of most coveted dogs, together with Samoyeds, Rottweilers and Akitas.
