Great white swoops to steal fisherman’s catch a day after shark kills student in same waters

This is the terrifying moment a giant great white shark swoops on a fisherman’s catch in the same waters where an engineering student was killed by a shark the day before.

The video was shot by fisherman in Nantucket – a tiny, isolated island off Cape Cod, Massachusetts – on Sunday.

Arthur Medici, 26, became the first person to die in a shark attack in the state since 1936 the day before the video was shot.

Shark activity in the area has been worryingly high, with the engineering student being bitten by a great white off Cape Cod, Massachusetts, in the same waters as Nantucket.

The man who shot this video of the beast swooping on a fisherman’s catch said: ‘We were fishing, aboard the Head Hunter out of Chatham, Massachusetts.

‘At the time of this video, we were roughly five miles off Nantucket. I was filming my brother reeling in a striped bass when 10-feet from the boat, a great white shark came out of nowhere and ate the fish.’

Paul Derba, whose nephew was about to reel in his catch, told local publication Cape Cod Times: ‘The thing was, it was just so fast.

‘The shark came from below, it didn’t come across the water. We didn’t see it until he’s right under the striper (fish).’

Derba, from Boston, added that his nephew was just about to reach into the water to grab his catch before the shark arrived at ate the striped bass in one.

Forty miles to the west of Nantucket is Martha’s Vineyard, the island where famous shark flick Jaws was filmed in the early 1970’s.

Arthur Medici was attacked Saturday afternoon when he was boogie boarding with his fiancé’s brother at Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet, police say.

The Cape Cod National Park Service reported that at 12.30pm the Revere man was knocked off his board then attacked by the shark. Police identified him Saturday evening.

Medici was born in Brazil and came to the United States two years ago to attend college to be an engineer, according to WCVB.

A GoFundMe page set up by grieving family and friends stated that the late Medici was ‘happily engaged to a smart, kind-hearted medical student with a bright future.’

Loved ones described him as a devout Christian who was humble, kind and always willing to help others.
