Greens predict Malcolm Turnbull gone as PM by Christmas

The Greens are predicting Malcolm Turnbull won’t last beyond Christmas as prime minister.

The minor party’s leader Richard Di Natale predicts the Liberal Party will bring him down over summer.

‘I don’t think the prime minister’s going to survive the Christmas period,’ he told Sky News presenter Andrew Bolt on Wednesday night.

Senator Di Natale is also forecasting that Labor leader Bill Shorten will be prime minister in early 2018, with polls consistently showing the opposition well ahead of the embattled government.

‘My prediction is that we’ll be going to the polls within a matter of months,’ he said.

‘This is a government that is completely divided and it is only a matter of time before I think we see an election and a change of government.’

The Victorian senator pointed to Nationals senator John ‘Wacka’ Williams push to take the Senate presidency, which usually goes to a Liberal when the Coalition has the numbers, as an indication of a government in disarray.

‘We’re already seeing now a scramble for who’s going to become president of the Senate,’ he said.

‘That tells you everything you need to know about where the government is.’

Special Minister of State Scott Ryan, a Victorian Liberal, is also reportedly vying for the position following Stephen Parry’s resignation last week from the post after discovering he was a dual British citizen through his father.

Earlier this week, One Nation leader Pauline Hanson called on Mr Turnbull to resign as prime minister.

‘Malcolm Turnbull should step aside. I’m sorry, he’s not a leader for this country. People have had a gutful of it,’ she told Sky News on Monday night from Maryborough in Queensland.

In May last year, Mr Turnbull said Ms Pauline would not be a welcome presence in the Australian parliament, only for her to be elected to the Senate two months later.
