Homeless tradie overwhelmed by more than 30 job offers after mining executive’s desperate plea

A homeless tradesman has been overwhelmed after receiving over 30 prospective job offers after a mining industry leader found him with a sign begging for work.

Executive of MMG Limited Luke Messer spotted Scott on the streets of Melbourne, and after chatting to him found out he had 26 years experience operating excavators.

Mr Messer put a call out on his LinkedIn profile and opened a GoFundMe page in the hope an employer had a job in time for Christmas.

In just one week since the post as been up, the message has been shared 2,500 times and read almost a million times.

Mr Messer also set up a GoFundMe that has raised almost $1,000 for Scott in just four days.

Scott has also received over 30 genuine job leads and more than ten offers of accommodation for him to spend the night.

Mr Messer has also been contacted by people who are willing to provide services such as resume writing and cash donations to get Scott back on his feet. 

‘He said, ‘I’ll try anything, I just need a bit of luck’,’ Mr Messer told his LinkedIn followers.

Sporting a beard, Scott was sitting on a milk crate pleading for help with a sign behind a beanie holding a few coins.

‘Homeless, I’m trying to raise $45 to get a room for tonight,’ it said.

‘I am also an experienced excavator operator needing full-time work.

‘Please, any help with above very appreciated.’

Mr Messer’s is extremely impressed by the positive response his post on LinkedIn has received in just six days. 

‘It is extremely pleasing to report I have been inundated with offers of support,’ he said in an updated LinkedIn post.

‘A lot of good people are genuinely interested to know how Scott is going and if he has found a job.’

Scott, who has experience operating 22 to 30-tonne excavators in the construction and mining industries, has received a deluge of phone calls from prospective employers.

‘I met with him this morning and he said he’s had so many phone calls he hasn’t been able to keep up,’ Mr Messer said. 

Scott told the mining executive he was thankful to ‘all the people who have offered their support’. 

The homeless man has so far had one job interview and is arranging another with a large construction firm.
