With annual leave at a premium, workers everywhere want to make sure they make the most of their time off.

But between summer festivals and city breaks, it can be difficult to know how to best use your time.

Now London-based life coach and wellness consultant Sloan Sheridan-Williams has shared her tips on how to maximise your time off – including how you can give yourself 24 days’ holiday in May by using just 14 days of annual leave.

Explaining how to make the holiday maths work, Sloan said that British workers should aim to book the 14 working days sandwiched between the Bank Holiday weekends at the beginning and end of May.

By doing this, workers will only be at work from Tuesday 1 May until Friday 4 May, and will have the rest of the month off work.

What days to book off

May 2018

Book: Tuesday 8 – Friday 11 (four days)

Monday 14 – Friday 18 (five days)

Monday 24 – Friday 28 (five days)

Total: 24 days off for 14 days’ leave

April 2018

Book: March 26-29 (four days)

April 3-6 (four days)

Total: 16 days off for eight days’ leave

Sloan added: ‘Booking your holiday smartly will mean you can benefit from 24 glorious days off in a row using only 14 days of annual leave – giving you more time to do something exciting and properly switch off before you have to switch on the computer again.’

A similar technique can be used over the Easter weekend at the end of March, when eight days of annual leave (March 26-29, April 3-6) will give you 16 days off work.

Sloan’s tips come as a recent survey revealed that 42 per cent of 20-something office workers do not take all of their annual leave.

The research, commissioned by Hotels.com, also reveals that the average millennial spends six days of annual leave on ‘boring’ tasks such as doctor’s appointments or chores.

Highlighting the importance of a prolonged period off work, Sloan added: ‘Taking a proper holiday is crucial for ensuring our emotional, physical and mental wellbeing.

‘Stepping out of our comfort zone through experiencing new things such as snorkelling or paragliding helps us put things into perspective, reducing stress levels.

‘And we can improve our working lives by getting away – exploring a new city can inspire creativity so we feel more refreshed and motivated when we do go back to work.’
