A huge fire has broken out at a block of flats in West London with 58 firefighters and eight engines deployed to tackle it. 

The London Fire Brigade used an aerial ladder to deal with the blaze at two flats in a converted terraced house in Kensington Gardens Square.

Images on social media showed huge plumes of smoke billowing across the leafy Bayswater street from flats on the third and fourth floors of the five storey house.

Firefighters were called at 6.50pm after taking around 20 emergency calls from members of the public. Eight people inside the house left before firefighters arrived.

At 9.30pm the force told MailOnline eight fire engines were still dealing with the blaze. A spokesman said: ‘The cause of the fire is not known at this stage.

‘We’ve still got eight engines there. It has badly damaged a flat on the third and fourth floors. Crews are going to be on scene onto the evening damping down.’

Locals were asked to avoid the area while emergency services were carrying out their work.
